Before you travel, open your remote viewing app and confirm every camera is online and streaming clearly. Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data connections. If you're travelling internationally, check that your NBN plan or 4G failover is active and hasn't hit any data caps.

We recommend setting up remote viewing at least a week before departure. This gives you time to troubleshoot any connectivity issues, update firmware, or adjust camera angles. If your system relies on port forwarding or DDNS, ensure your router hasn't been reset or your IP address hasn't changed.

Configure Smart Motion Detection and Alerts

Hikvision's AcuSense technology uses deep learning to distinguish between humans, vehicles, and other moving objects like animals or foliage. Dahua's SMD (Smart Motion Detection) offers similar filtering. When configured correctly, you'll only receive alerts when a person enters your property or a vehicle pulls into your driveway.

Set up detection zones to cover entry points like front doors, side gates, and driveways, while excluding areas with constant movement like footpaths or trees. Adjust sensitivity levels to account for Australian conditions: harsh shadows at midday, heavy rain, or cockatoos landing on your fence.

Log into your NVR and check the current storage status. If your drive is more than 70% full, consider upgrading to a larger surveillance-grade hard drive before you leave. Trim any overhanging branches or foliage that might trigger motion alerts or block the camera's view. Gum trees, in particular, drop leaves and bark that can obstruct lenses or create constant false alarms.

Integrate Alarms, Lighting and Professional Monitoring

CCTV is a powerful deterrent and evidence-gathering tool, but it works best when integrated with other security layers. If you have an alarm system, ensure it's armed and linked to your cameras. Many modern systems allow you to trigger recording or send snapshots when the alarm is activated.

Smart lighting is another effective deterrent. Set exterior lights on a timer or link them to motion detection so they activate when someone approaches your property. This creates the impression that someone is home and improves camera footage quality at night.

For high-value properties or extended absences, consider professional security monitoring. A monitored system ensures that alarms and alerts are responded to immediately, even if you're in a different time zone or unable to check your phone.

If you're away for more than a month, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to check your property periodically. Provide them with temporary access to your remote viewing app so they can verify any alerts and respond if needed.

Common Holiday Mode Mistakes to Avoid

The most common mistake we see is homeowners assuming their system is 'set and forget'. Technology fails, power outages occur, and internet connections drop. Always test your system thoroughly before you leave, and have a backup plan if something goes wrong.

Don't rely solely on cloud storage unless you have a robust internet connection. Many Australian homes, especially in regional areas, have limited upload speeds that can't support continuous cloud backup. Local NVR storage with remote access is far more reliable.
